WHERE TO FISH AROUND THE SHIRE
PWC fishing is quickly becoming popular and for good reason. It is more practical, efficient and agile than a boat. You will be able to explore locations previously unavailable to traditional fishing crafts which means you get close to the action and experience fishing like never before. Being located in the Sutherland Shire, we are blessed by being surrounded by the ocean and river waterways, perfect for dropping a line. Check out a few of our top fishing spots that we’ve put together in and around the shire.
It is important to know that if you are planning on fishing in NSW waters, you must carry a recreational fishing permit or you may cop a $200 fine. If you don’t have one, you can apply for the permit online which comes with a fee. All you need for the application is your personal details and a credit card.
UPPER PORT HACKING
Perfect for a full-day fishing, the Upper Port Hacking waterway is a great place to fish on a PWC where waterways can get quite narrow. It starts from eight knot boating channels that extend to Lilli Pilli and Carruthers Bay. In the Lilli Pilli Sand Flats, it is possible to catch bream, whiting, flathead, mulloway, tailor, salmon, bonito and trevally. If you travel north towards Yowie Point, you can catch bream and John dory. In Gymea Bay, you can find squid which you can use as live bait for mulloway or a snapper. Don’t forget to bring your LinQ cooler to store your catch of the day!
There are a few boat ramps which are listed below:

GUNNAMATTA PARK, CRONULLA
At Gunnamatta Park, you can find big waves and currents flowing along the coastline, bringing in scores of fish your way. You can fish off the top of the swimming baths (outside the nets) or out in the ocean (closest boat ramp: Cronulla Boat Ramp). The types of fish that you can catch are leather jackets, tailor, flathead, whiting, bream, and salmon.

BRIGHTON-LE-SANDS, COOKS RIVER
At Brighton, also known to be an angler’s paradise, you can find Berkley Minnow, Tailor, blackfish, trevally, flathead, whiting, salmon, snapper, yellowtail kingfish and mullet swimming on Cooks River. The best time when fishing on the shores during the early evening where the chances of catching a fish are higher and you also get to enjoy the sunset with occasional views of planes departing from the airport. If you’ve got yourself a PWC, you can go spearfishing in the Cooks River and score yourself a yellowtail kingfish like these guys! The closest boat ramp is at Kyeemagh.
